I’m a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in hip surgery. I was appointed to Southampton University Hospital NHS Trust in 1998. I did my medical training at Oxford and trained in orthopaedic surgery at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, The Royal Adelaide Hospital and The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham.

At the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital I was trained in the technique of Birmingham hip resurfacing, which I introduced into the Wessex Region. When I do a hip operation, I use a variety of implants, both cemented and uncemented depending on the underlying problem and technical requirements. I am also experienced in less invasive surgical techniques.

I am a Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association and a member of the British Hip Society. I instruct on courses for surgeons who want to do hip resurfacing and am a consultant for Finsbury Orthopaedics, the company which manufactures the hip resurfacing components.

Every year I do about 220 primary hip replacements and 40-50 revision operations. I audit the results of my operations and conduct research projects on the outcome of hip resurfacing, and the use of large metal bearings in hip replacement surgery.
